She’s glad Matt sleeps for most of their flight home. She needs to gain some clarity about what happened in the last few days. Something has been set in motion, but is it good? Matt is depressed about himself, and they left Joe in a terrible state of exhaustion, too tired to get out of bed or even eat. She should have taken things more slowly with him—she would have if he hadn’t been pushing so hard. Perhaps they should have postponed their flight, but Joe insisted he’d be fine on his own after a day or so of rest.

Despite these things, she knows something now she didn’t know before. She was able to teach Joe. She can teach. He performed an intervention on the beach without her assistance, and this fact cracks things wide open. Diane was right: She can impart this skill, not to everyone, but to some. She wishes Matt hadn’t gotten cold feet. But it makes some intuitive sense to her. He’s more of a rationalist than Joe. Joe, as a novelist, passes much of his time in the labyrinths of his imagination.

The thought of others learning to do what she does ignites her with hope. If others could do interventions alongside her, she might not feel so alone, so uniquely responsible. Could she develop a team of people like herself who could judiciously begin to heal the Earth? Who would these people be? They’d have to be imaginative, fluid thinkers with loose boundaries and little stake in appearing rational. How could she locate such people?

She thinks of her awful meeting with Vince Carmichael, the meteorologist and tornado expert who was once her hero. He mentioned a Kickapoo woman who claimed to be able to influence natural forces. Could she be found? Bronwyn doesn’t know the woman’s name, and she’s certainly not about to ask Vince—it’s doubtful he would know anyway. But that woman doesn’t need Bronwyn’s teaching. Who else then? Who might help her locate such potentially teachable people?

The plane begins to descend over the snowfields of Mt. Rainier, awash in the saturated pink light of sunset that spills into the ravines, tinting the snow, the trees, even the rocks. It occurs to her in a flash—there’s no need to look further, the people she needs have already come to her.
